Man Who Drowned in Skagit River Identified

Skagit County, Washington- The Skagit County Coroners Office Identified the man who died earlier this week in a drowning incident on the Skagit River as 51-year old Todd Byerly of Concrete, Washington.

Mr. Byerly died in an accidental drowning on Tuesday, October 4th while loading his boat in the 46000 block of State Route 20 at the Baker River Boat Launch. Skagit County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to reports of a possible drowning at 4:53 pm.

Witnesses told Skagit County Sheriff’s Deputies that the mans boat started to drift away as he was loading it and when Mr. Byerly attempted to grab it he slipped into the river and was swept away.

An intense Search and Rescue effort was launched and Mr. Byerly was found by a Navy Search and Rescue Helicopter Crew at 6:09 pm about a half-mile downstream from where he slipped into the river.

Medics from Aero Skagit Ambulance and Firefighters from Skagit County Fire District 10 performed CPR on the man, but he was unable to be revived and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A Memorial for Mr. Byerly will be held on October 22nd, 2016 at 1 pm at the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church located at 1511 E. Broadway Street in Mount Vernon.
