18-Year Old Elma Teen Dies in Mason County Crash

Mason County, WA – The Washington State Patrol responded to a two-car fatality crash on North State Route 3, five miles South of Allyn on January, 8th, 2017.

According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, 23-year old Zachary Vanderwal of Shelton was traveling Southbound on State Route 3 at mile post 15 in a white 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup. The press memo states he attempted to pass another vehicle, went into the oncoming lane of traffic and struck a silver 2000 Saturn head-on. The driver of the Saturn, 18-year old Kyla Brown of Elma, died at the scene.

Mr. Vanderwal was transported by private vehicle to a local hospital for treatment.

Both vehicles were totaled in the crash and impounded by Northshore towing for safe keeping.

The State Patrol says drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash, and charges are pending against the causing driver.
