Whatcom County, WA – The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management signed a Proclamation of Emergency due to the ongoing severe winter weather that Whatcom County has been experiencing since February 2nd, 2017.

“Whatcom County has been severely impacted by the current round of severe winter weather. Public works, Law Enforcement, Fire Services and Medical Services have all been working 24/7 to deal with the impacts of the storms” said Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo.

The Northern and Eastern communities of Whatcom County have been the most significantly impacted with extended power outages, snow measured in feet, drifting snow and all schools in Whatcom County have been closed.

Whatcom County Fire District 14 requested the American Red Cross to open a Cold Weather Shelter at the East Valley Regional Center located at 8251 Kendall Road in Maple Falls.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management is coordinating the response to impacted communities in Whatcom County at the Whatcom Unified Emergency Coordination Center in Partnership with the City of Bellingham Office of Emergency Management.
The City of Lynden has also proclaimed an emergency in the city.
The Proclamation of Emergencies has been forwarded to the Washington State Military Department of Emergency Management Division with a request for Public Assistance for Damages to Infrastructure. The Proclamation will be forwarded to the Governor’s Office.
The Proclamation states that the Winter Storms beginning on February 2nd, 2017 are occurring throughout Whatcom County, with heavy snow, extended arctic winds, and extended power outages, have caused and continue to cause public and private sector damage and the incident is a threat to life and property.
Whatcom County’s request for assistance is due to the fact that the severity and magnitude of this disaster is beyond the capability of local resources. They are seeking public assistance for damages to infrastructure and other appropriate state and/or federal resources.
