Teen Visiting from China Missing In Whatcom County

Whatcom County, WA –  The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says Search and Rescue Crews are actively looking for a missing 18-year old camper from China who was visiting Camp Firwood in the 1700 block of Lake Whatcom Boulevard in Whatcom County.

Rob Lee, Director of Camp and Retreat Ministries, released a statement saying “July 25th Camp Firwood had one of our high school campers go missing late in the afternoon. He is 18 and a Chinese National who is here with a tour group. A thorough search of the grounds took place with no results.  At that time the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Department was notified and soon after Whatcom County Search and Rescue was brought in. The search continues as of 9 a.m. this morning with every effort being made to locate this young man. The parents/guardian have been notified. Campers and staff are doing well in the middle of a difficult situation. We are planning to complete this week of camp under as normal operating circumstances as possible.  As you can imagine, getting hold of us by phone is difficult as we are working with the local authorities to resolve the situation. As always, your prayers are appreciated.” 

According to an article by the Bellingham Herald, 18-year old Bin Wang of China, was last seen around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25th, at the top of a steep trail that leads down  to the water. Wang’s shirt, shoes and other items of clothing were found nearby.

Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo told the Bellingham Herald that  “Wang doesn’t know how to swim, there’s a steep 30-foot drop to the shoreline where his clothes were found, it doesn’t look good.”

Camp Firwood is a Christian-orientated youth camp operated by The Firs. According to the camps  online records,  High School Camp #302 for grades 9 through 12,  ran from Sunday, July 23rd until Saturday, July 29th.
