Island County, WA – The Island County Sheriff’s Office responded to a weapons offense in the 900 block of Gainsburough Road in Coupeville around 4:30 p.m. on August 27th, 2017.
According to a press release from the Island County Sheriff’s Office, the original 9-1-1 caller told dispatchers that a man was beating a dog with a shovel. A short time later the call was updated to state the subject had shot the dog with a rifle.
Island County Sheriff’s Deputies located 36-year old Johnathan RASMUSSEN at the scene. Deputies learned that the dog had killed a chicken on a third parties property. RASMUSSEN followed the dog from the third parties residence, back to the residence where it lived and beat it with a pickax before shooting it with a .22 caliber rifle to “finish it off.”
RASMUSSEN was taken into custody and booked into the Island County Jail where he is being held for 1st Degree Animal Cruelty, 2nd Degree Malicious Mischief (DV) and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
RASMUSSEN will make his first court appearance later today.
