Mount Vernon, WA – Mount Vernon Police Department detectives are investigating the death of a 50-year old female inmate at the Skagit County Community Justice Center.
According to a press release from the Mount Vernon Police Department, on June 5, 2019 around 7:45pm, corrections staff called 911 for medical assistance after a female inmate complaining of chest pain and difficulty breathing, collapsed as she was being escorted from her assigned jail pod to the in-house medical facility.
Justice Center staff performed CPR, and when Fire and EMS personnel arrived, additional life-saving measures were attempted, however the female was pronounced dead at the scene. As is standard for in-custody deaths, the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office requested Mount Vernon Police Detectives to conduct the investigation.
Mount Vernon detectives responded and processed the scene, interviewing corrections staff, as well as approximately 30 female inmates who either shared a cell with the deceased or were housed in the same jail pod. From the interviews, detectives learned the inmate suffered from several known medical conditions, and was being treated with numerous medications.
Once the scene investigation concluded, the body was turned over to the Skagit County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death, as well as next of kin notification.
Normal operations at the Skagit County Community Justice Center were halted for several hours, but resumed shortly after midnight.
The investigation is continuing.
