Christmas came early this year for one person who has been missing his four-legged family member for nearly a year.
Buddy, a middle-aged black Labrador Retriever, went missing around midday on January 12, 2019, from the Baker Lake Trailhead and it was presumed at the time by his owner that he was taken. At the time of his disappearance, Buddy was wearing tags with his name and the owner’s contact phone number. When he was found last month, that tag was missing. Nobody really knows exactly where Buddy has been this past year, but today Buddy is finally home.
After Buddy’s disappearance his owner took out ads throughout the area from Whatcom County to Tacoma which ran through April in hopes of being reunited with Buddy. The Bear in the Mountains Facebook page posted about the missing dog and shared an ad from the Helping Lost Pets website to help spread the word. Even with the ads, Buddy was not found.
Buddy’s owner, who currently lives in North Snohomish County, moved here with Buddy from Virginia about two years ago and has had Buddy for approximately 5 years prior to Buddy’s disappearance.
Almost eleven months later, on November 17, 2019, Buddy was picked up by animal control in Mount Vernon, Washington. He was taken to the Humane Society of Skagit Valley (HSSV) where the search for his owner began. The staff diligently worked to try to find Buddy’s family. Using the rabies tag which he was still wearing, they were able to locate a veterinarian in Virginia which enabled the HSSV to locate Buddy’s owner.
Buddy was reunited with his owner on Friday, December 6, 2019. Buddy weighed 80 lb. when he went missing and has gained weight in the past year, which leads his owner to believe he was intentionally taken and kept. The reunion was captured on video and posted to the HSSV YouTube channel.
According to his owner, Buddy is very happy and excited to be home. His owner says he is behaving as if he never left. Although Buddy is sleeping a lot and is likely de-stressing, he seems very relaxed and comfortable at home now.
