Music has always been a healing tool for me, and I’m sure many of you feel the same way. While I understand that closing down bars & music venues is what is needed for containment of the COVID 19 virus, it is like a knife through my soul. Yes there are all sorts of music streaming services out there …. and yes I have several hundred CD’s, but it’s not the same as being out watching live music and connecting with other people who feel the same way.
One of our fabulous local bands, Lazy Acres, had two shows cancelled this last week due to the virus scare. So they took matters into their own hands and did a live streaming video on Facebook. (https://www.facebook.com/TheLazyAcresBand/videos/650534342416247/?vh=e&d=n).

These guys are amazing. It was a fabulous idea and was well received and I’m now seeing some posts from other musicians who are doing the same. Since our weekly music roundup will not have live shows to list for awhile, I will try to keep you up-to-date on some live streaming that will hopefully be coming out.
Another great way to experience the live music entertainment in your home is to put YouTube up on your TV and go to some sites that have live music videos. If you’re a local music enthusiast, koolbluesmama_music has hundreds of live videos from all of our favorite local bands (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUuPj2oaUHiCId4PrZcq6yQ).
You can sit in your recliner chair with a beverage and pretend you have a front row seat. Or you can get up and dance by yourself or with a significant other. If you’re into nationally renowned name bands, they all have their own YouTube channels.
If you’re home with the kids, putting on music and dancing is a fun activity for families to do together. I’ve never seen a kid who doesn’t like to dance. Plus it helps to expand children’s minds and is great exercise and stress relief.

Why not try to YouTube or music stream some genres you don’t usually listen to. Are you a rock fan? Maybe try to listen to some bluegrass. Are you a country music fan? How about trying out some indie folk tunes. Possibilities are endless. With more down time comes lots of opportunities to explore the art of music.
There are also some great local music podcasts where you can hear local musicians sing their original tunes and hear about their progression into becoming musicians. (https://www.ourpnwmusic.com)

Along with a lot of businesses out there, the local musicians depend on shows to earn their living. If you are in the same boat, then enjoying music on sites such as YouTube are free. However, if you’re not going to be hurting financially from this quarantine, you can visit the websites or Facebook pages of these local musicians and purchase some merchandise in order to support them through this hardship. It’s just another extension of the “shop locally” idea.
Hopefully we’ll all get through this and come out stronger on the other side
Rock & Roll will never die 🤘
