Emergency personnel responded to the 29000 block of 80th Avenue NW in Stanwood after receiving reports of a High-Risk Crash in the area. Arriving personnel found a white vehicle that had left the roadway and crashed into a tree at a high rate of speed. Both the driver of the vehicle and a woman were ejected from the vehicle in the crash.  The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and medics transported the male driver to a local hospital. Initially, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office was informed that the male had passed away and shared that information on Twitter, but later, they updated their information and stated they had received wrong information and the males condition was unknown.

According to probable cause affidavits of arrest, during the course of the investigation, the man admitted to detectives that he had been drinking prior to the crash and had consumed four beers before getting behind the wheel of his car and driving. The man claimed while driving on 80th Avenue NW he swerved to avoid a small animal in the roadway just prior to the crash.

However, his account of the crash did not match the evidence at the crash scene. Crash Scene Investigators determined the male was traveling at approximately 80 miles-per-hour in a posted 35 mile-per-hour zone when he lost control of his vehicle, it left the roadway at a high rate of speed and crashed into a tree, exploding on impact.  Detectives believe the excessive speed and driving under the influence of alcohol were the cause of the crash.

ILya Stepanovish Hrudzko is currently being held in the Snohomish County Jail for Investigation of Vehicular Homicide (Alcohol or Drugs).
