Deputies Respond to 11-year-old Shot near Alger, WA

Whatcom County, WA – The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Department responded to a weapons offense for a reported assault with a gun around 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14th, 2024, on East Alder Drive in the Glenhaven area of Alger, Washington.

According to a press release from Deb Slater with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, a 13-year-old teen called 9-1-1 to report they had accidentally shot their 11-year-old sibling.  **According to the police Scanner Archives obtained by Skagit Breaking from Broadcastify.com, radio communications between the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Deputies  and 9-1-1 Dispatchers while they were en route to the scene stated the 11-year-old was shot in the head with a handgun by the 13-year-old.  Deputies responded to the area and secured the handgun and started providing life-saving care to the younger child until medics arrived. The 11-year-old victim was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham and transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where their condition remains unknown.

The children’s parents were not home at the time of the shooting.

The press release states both children are students in the Mount Baker School District, which has been made aware of the incident and the school district has brought in additional counselors across their campuses.

Additional information was not immediately available on how the child obtained the handgun or if any charges would be filed in the incident.

Deputies were told the shooting was an accident.  The investigation is ongoing.
