OSO, WA: The newly paved and striped State Route 530 in Oso is scheduled to reopen to two-way traffic with a 50 mph speed limit by the morning commute on Monday, Sept. 22, exactly six months after the March 22 mudslide. Contractor crews will continue to work until mid-October to prepare nearby soil for landscaping, finish installing rocks to armor the new slope leading to the roadway and restore streams and wetlands. In late fall, landscaping crews will plant trees and shrubs on WSDOT property next to the new road. There still may be some delays on the road as work trucks move in and out of the work zone.

WSDOT has also invited survivors and victims’ families to plant 43 evergreen trees in a small grove east of Steelhead Drive to honor the 43 people who died in the mudslide. The idea was developed after discussions with family members of those lost. The planting will be done in a private ceremony on Sept. 27. Later that day, the public is invited to take part in a community event and details can be found by clicking here.
