Sedro Woolley, WA: Students at the Sedro Woolley High School say they are “Fed Up” with the school administration and are holding a Student Walk Out to demonstrate their frustrations on Friday May 22nd, 2015. They have created an online event on Facebook and an online “Hash-Tag” for other students to voice their concerns and follow the walk out. The Hash-Tag is #SWHSPrison.
According to students we talked to, the students are upset about being locked out of their classrooms and being given detentions for being tardy to class for legitimate reasons.
One students stated; “We feel like our school has become a prison and we’ve created a hash-tag for all the other students to voice their concerns using the hash-tag online. We don’t care if it is on Twitter or Facebook or any social Media they use, we want all students to voice their concerns and then join us for the Walk-Out”. We’ve removed the students name beings they are a minor.
A quick search of the Hash-Tag on Facebook has turned up several posts from a handful of students where they have vented their frustrations. The amount of posts using the specific Hash Tag is growing at a pretty steady pace.
In another post, a male student is upset because he says a school nurse isn’t available before 12:30.
We asked student N.L. ” What are the unfair items that have brought about the concerns and what do students hope to accomplish or change as a result of the Walk out?” His response was this: “For one, some of the students don’t get treated as fair as the others. In my English and Math classes the teachers are more fair to the girls than the boys. I’m not saying every teacher is like that but its pretty concerning. Also if you suck up to the teachers you get more privileges. In my opinion, us students are hoping to accomplish equality for all students.”
Several students who contacted us were asked, “What do you hope to accomplish during the Walk-Out?”
A Student with the Initials K.W., stated “To teach the district to fix the problems. And to be a better school”
A student with the initials M.V. stated: “For them to make a few changes in the rules. Like, locking all the doors, security guards on every corner. Rules are rules. The ultimate goal is, us kids should feel and the parents should feel, welcome in our school, not locked out or to lock us out even just 5 minutes late. There needs to be a change or SWHS will get a worse rep in the county.”
Student R.M states: “From my opinion I want them not to take up our valuable class time by making us 15 minutes late to class, instead of just two. I want respect and equality of students from every staff member. I believe that SWHS chooses favorites and does not treat every student equal. I chose to do the walk out because I believe that students shouldn’t have to make up the day the teachers decided to walk out.”
One student with the initials S.B. posted on the event page: ” if the school is going to enforce the dress code on one person they should enforce it to all.”
Several students are posting their frustrations towards the principal, while other students are defending the principal stating she is only doing her job.
We talked to a few students who thought the planned walk out was silly and said they would not be participating. Those students didn’t understand why they students felt a need for a walk out. A student is quoted as saying “shouldn’t they be talking to the administrators and educators about their concerns instead of walking out?”
You can follow the students frustrations and planned walk out by searching the hash-tag #SWHSPrison or by visiting the Sedro Woolley High School Walk Out Event page on Facebook by clicking here.
