Skagit County: Search and Rescue crews have removed the bodies of two people from a small plane crash about one mile north of State Route 20 in the area of Rainy Pass, Washington.
Members of Skagit County Search and Rescue (SAR), along with a Skagit County Sheriff’s Deputy and others left around 8 am this morning and hiked into the secluded plane crash site following GPS coordinates from aerial searchers.
Searchers found the crash site, which contained a still smoldering, small plane with documentation leading Searchers to believe the plane was the one they were looking for from Montana.
Searchers then called Us Forest Service Firefighters to assist with putting out a small brush fire that was believed to have been started when the plane crashed. This information was consistent with information provided by the sole survivor of the crash to authorities.
The Sole survivor, 16 year old Autumn Veatch, stated that after the crash she tried to rescue her step grandparents but could not due to a fire in the plane.
Officials will have to confirm the ownership of the plane during the course of their investigation, however the plane is believed to be the one owned by Leland and Sharon Bowman of Montana.
Search and Rescue crews turned the remains of the crash victims over to the Skagit County Coroners Office.
The Skagit County Coroner will release information on the official identity of the victims once they process the bodies and next of kin has been properly notified.
The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office has completed their investigation and recovery efforts and they have turned over the scene to the National Transportation Safety Board.
Information obtained from WSDOT, Whatcom Sheriff, Civil Air Patrol and Twitter.
