Skagit County, WA- Over 300 volunteers will help create a welcoming environment for 500+ guests who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness at the 2015 Skagit Project Homeless Connect. Guest intake will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m., with services continuing until 3 p.m., Friday., Sept. 11, at Skagit Valley College. A free community lunch is provided. September 11 is also a Skagit Transit free community ride day, a 9/11 National Day of Remembrance and Service, and a United Way Days of Caring event.
A project of the Skagit Coalition to End Homelessness, the sixth annual Project Homeless Connect is a collaboration between 50+ providers offering same-day assistance and referrals for stability and quality of life services. Podiatry, women’s health, dental cleanings and procedures, vision services, veterans’ services, pet care, housing assistance, legal aid, clothing and toiletries, haircuts, photos, and help getting identification are just a few of the resources available.
In 2014 Medical Teams International provided one mobile dental unit. This year two vans will provide services, thanks to Employees Community Fund of Boeing and local volunteer dentists and hygienists, Community Action of Skagit County, University of Washington, Northwest Career & Technical Academy, and the Mount Baker Dental Society. For the first time, two days of dental care will be available, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11 and 12. Screenings for both days’ appointments will take place during Friday’s event. Adult dental care continues to be the highest-need, lowest-availability service in the county, according to 700 low-income residents surveyed for the “Skagit Prosperity Report.”
Community generosity makes Project Homeless Connect possible. Churches and community-based groups add to the hospitality, and a band will provide a fun atmosphere. Project Homeless Connect is a United Way Days of Caring event, and a 9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service. This year’s sponsors include: Employees Community Fund of Boeing, Amerigroup, Jerry H. Walton Foundation, Group Health, Amergroup, Skagit Regional Health, and Skagit County.
