Sedro Woolley, WA: Vocational Students at W.F. West High School in Chehalis had the opportunity to test out a unique logging simulator this week provided by NC Machinery and students in Sedro Woolley will have a chance to do the same soon.
According to a story published by Chronline.com, the machine, modeled after a 325D Forestry Machine and valued at $80,000, provides a real life experience in a safe manner for students who are interested in learning more about forestry and logging. As most Skagit County residents know, Logging has long fueled the rural areas of Skagit County.
The machine is bolted in place but allows students to practice maneuvering the machine with joysticks, a mouse and levers. The machine moves and reacts to the tasks the students are performing from loading the machine on a trailer to picking up logs and moving them around.
The machine was at the W.F West High School on Tuesday and Wednesday and it was the first time it had been in Washington State as it is usually used in British Columbia.
Multiple other simulator machines exist for loaders, dozers, and excavators but this machine is the only one in existence focused on logging.
The simulator tracks how much time it took the students to complete a task, how much fuel was used and other items.
A real world logging machine like this would cost around half a million dollars and would cost between $3 and $4 per gallon of fuel used. It would literally costs hundreds of dollars for someone to just sit in a “real” machine and practice using it.
The machine is expected to visit Sedro Woolley, Port Angeles and Port Orchard while it is in the State.
