Burlington, Washington– Skagitbreaking.com has received a press release from the Skagit County Department of Emergency Management with an investigation update into the Cascade Mall Shooting from the S.M.A.R.T team detectives.
The press release is below in its entirety:
“On September 25, 2016, S.M.A.R.T. detectives, with the assistance of federal authorities, continued their investigation into the Cascade Mall shootings.
Nearly 50 detectives contributed to the investigative process throughout the day, and were able to accomplish the following:
• Detectives have followed up on 85 percent of the more than 250 tips received via phone and email. Through these tips, new witnesses have been identified.
• Executed a search warrant at the suspect’s Oak Harbor residence. During the search, detectives obtained personal documents, electronic devices and other evidence. No additional firearms were located at the residence.
• The vehicle believed to be used in the crime, a blue 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier, is secure; The Washington State Patrol Crime Lab Team will conduct a search during the upcoming week.
• The suspect has been interviewed by detectives. Any motive is still under investigation.
• The suspect’s former girlfriend has been located and interviewed. She has an employment history with Macy’s but not at the Burlington Mall location.
• A family liaison has been established with all victim families.
• The Skagit County Coroner’s office is still working through the scientific process of identifying victims. • The suspect will make an appearance in Skagit County court on Monday morning.
• In the upcoming days, S.M.A.R.T. detectives will re-interview witnesses as well as interview new witnesses, family and acquaintances that have been identified through the tips and investigative process.
