Pierce County, Washington – The Washington State Patrol responded to a fatal crash on Southbound I-5 just south of State Route 512 in Pierce County around 2:13 am on October 21st, 2016.

According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, three vehicle had been in a collision in the left lane of I-5 just South of SR512. Two of the drivers had exited their vehicles when a fourth vehicle, a 2016 Toyota Corolla driven by 22-year old Dillon Nash of Fort Lewis plowed into the back of one of the vehicles in the original crash. The impact of the crash shoved that vehicle into the vehicle ahead of it and one of the drivers who had exited his vehicle was struck in the crash. CPR was performed on scene, but the driver, Identified by the Washington State Patrol as 46-year old Jason Ley of Yelm, was pronounced deceased at Madigan Hospital. His 2004 Ford Explorer was totaled and impounded to the Tacoma Washington State Patrol bullpen.

Mr. Nash was injured and after treatment, he was booked into the Pierce County Jail for driving under the influence and vehicular homicide. His vehicle was impounded to the Tacoma Washington State Patrol Bullpen.

Michael Maurice, 49 of Olympia was not injured. He was the driver of vehicle two. His 2008 GMC Acadia was impounded to the Tacoma Washington State Patrol Bullpen.
The second driver who had exited his vehicle was not injured. He was listed as 27-year old Tony Abbott of Centralia. His 2008 Ford F350 truck was damaged but driven from the scene.
The Cause of the crash is listed as Driving under the influence and charges of vehicular homicide are pending against the causing driver.
