Bellingham, WA – Search and Rescue crews have located the wreckage of a small aircraft that disappeared from air traffic controller contact on Thursday, December 29th, on the Debub Peninsula of Jefferson County. Washington State Department of Transportation spokesperson Barbara LeBoe said in a prepared statement “Four Occupants have been located in the wreckage but there were no survivors.”
The missing plane, a Fixed Wing Single Engine Cessna 182P, departed Seattle’s Boeing Field just after 6 p.m. on Thursday December 29th, en route to Port Angeles. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane at 6:44 p.m. in the area of Dabob Bay.
According to a report from Kathrynsreport.com, The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said it was alerted at 7 p.m. Thursday by the Navy, which reported that a plane may have gone down on Coyle Peninsula. The Navy saw a plane at 1,200 feet having difficulty in weather conditions. Deputies searched Thursday night but couldn’t find any wreckage.
According to a prepared statement from Washington State DOT Spokesperson Barbara LaBoe, search crews used radar forensic data and the plane’s emergency locator transmitter to locate the downed aircraft in a heavily wooded ravine around 8:15 a.m. on the morning of December 30th, 2016
Michael Haas, Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney and Coroner, identified the victims as 63-year old Sequim Pharmacist and pilot, Jon R. Bernhoft, his fiancé, 61-year old Carla Parke and her two grandchildren, 9-year old grandson Logan and a 5-year old granddaughter, Mackenzie, both of Bellingham, Washington.
