Traffic Revision Under Consideration for Downtown Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon, WA – The City of Mount Vernon is exploring the possibility of removing the traffic signal light at South 1st Street and Gates Street, and replacing it with all-way stop signs at the intersections of Myrtle, Gates and Montgomery streets, according to a release from the Mount Vernon Downtown Association.

The Objectives are to reduce through traffic speed, improve vehicle mobility from side streets, reduce left turn delays from 1st street onto side streets, and reduce pedestrian delays in crossing 1st Street.

Mike Love, City Engineer is quoted as saying  “Next week and continuing for a few weeks we plan to run a test to see how traffic responds to operating the traffic signal at First and Gates Street in all-way stop mode during the day. We currently operate this signal with all-way stop control late in the evening through early morning hours with good results. The engineering department will perform periodic observations of the traffic during the test and report back to council members next month. We believe using an all-way stop at this intersection and potentially adding all-way stop control at Montgomery and Myrtle intersections will improve freedom of movement for folks driving and walking downtown, with minor inconvenience to the drivers passing through.”

Citizens are encouraged to provide feedback to the Mount Vernon Downtown Association on this potential change.
