Seattle, WA – According to a Washington State Ferries (WSF) spokesman, a 67-year-old woman was rescued by crew members after jumping from the deck of a Bainbridge Island-bound ferry.

Around 2:15 PM on Friday, January 19, 2018, passengers reported that a woman had jumped from the back deck of the ferry as it was headed from Seattle to Bainbridge.

Crew members responded by throwing a life ring to the woman and launching a rescue boat. They were able to get the woman into the boat and return her to shore in Seattle. The whole rescue took less than 10 minutes, according to WSF spokesman Brian Mannion. The woman was then transferred to a local hospital.

Brian Mannion also reported that although it is not a common event for passengers to jump from ferries, crew members complete training drills at least once per week on how to respond to a passenger in the water.

WSF is conducting an internal investigation and the Washington State Patrol will also investigate.
