Early Morning Fire Damages House in Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon, WA – Firefighters from the Mount Vernon Fire Department responded to a fire in a residence in the 1500 block of E. Spruce Street at 3:37 a.m. on January 23rd, 2018.

Due to information received by Skagit County 9-1-1 and the Mount Vernon Police Department, the fire response was quickly upgraded to a second alarm to ensure an adequate number of fire personnel would be on scene to handle the emergency.

Mount Vernon Firefighters were assisted by firefighters from the City of Burlington, Skagit County Fire District 2 (McLean Road) and Skagit County Fire District 3 (Conway/Cederdale).  Skagit County Medic 1 responded to provide emergency medical assistance if needed.  A total of approximately 25 firefighters responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, fire units found fire and smoking coming through the roof and the interior of the structure was fully involved. The home’s occupants had not been located.

Initial knockdown of the fire occurred within 20 minutes of the fire departments arrival, complete extinguishment ensued shortly after.

Puget Sound Energy and Cascade Natural Gas responded and disconnected power and gas to the building.

Fire Crews remain on scene pending completion of the fire investigation process. The cause of the fire has not been determined and initials estimates are that the fire caused around $133,000 in damage.

“The Mount Vernon Fire Department encourages all home owners to have working smoke alarms in their home,” MVFD Chief Bryan Brice asserted. “Families should have emergency plans and practice them. We want all homes and businesses to be fire safe!”
