The inspiration of a high school English teacher in 1965, Railroad Days celebrates the era of steam trains that puffed through Granite Falls beginning in 1892 when the Everett and Monte Cristo Railroad reached town, pushing through to Monte Cristo by 1893. Gold mining lasted only a decade but logging and passenger trains were a familiar sight for many more years, bringing tourists from Seattle and Everett to the famous Big Four Inn and Resort, and mineral and timber to Everett. Today, remnants of the train tracks along the Stillaguamish River, and the Big Four Inn stone fireplace are the primary indicators of a rich life and culture that thrived along the Mountain Loop Highway a mere 100 years ago. More recently discovered artifacts of Native cultures in the area further demonstrate what locals have long known, that Granite Falls is the place to be!
