Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck By Train in Monroe

Monroe, WA – A pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train in the area of Highway  2 and Woods Creek Road  in Monroe around 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 16th, 2018.

According to a press release, the train crew applied the emergency brake and attempted to stop before hitting the pedestrian and knocking him off a trestle and into a creek below.  The train was said to be traveling around  40 miles per hour and was headed from Everett to Chicago when the incident happened.

Monroe police contacted the  Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, who located the body of a man believed to be  in his 30’s  in a log jam below the train.

Another man was hit by a train at the South end of the King Street Tunnel  in Seattle about 10 minutes before this incident.  According to the release, crews sounded the horn and applied the emergency brake in an attempt to stop the train before  an elderly man waved his arms and then buckled down in front of the train before being struck by the a train. Officials estimate that train was  traveling around 20 miles per hour and was headed from Seattle to Chicago.

The two deaths are the first two in Washington State since the new year. Last year, 23 people died in Washington State after being struck by trains.

The identity of the man killed was not released.
