Mount Vernon, WA– On Tuesday, January 30th, 2018 around 9:57 a.m., City of Mount Vernon Fire Department Units responded to a fire in a residence located at 2610 E. Section Street #76.
The Owner reported that he had been alerted to the fire by his smoke detector and that smoke was filling his residence and it appears to be coming from the furnace.
City of Burlington Fire crews and Skagit County Fire District #2 (McLean Road) fire personnel responded to the scene as mutual aid units to assist Mount Vernon firefighters.
According to a release from Peter Donovan with the City of Mount Vernon, upon arrival, fire units found the residence filled with smoke and quickly began fire suppression operations. The main floor of the residence was not involved in fire, but fire was found to have burned its way underneath the flooring and into the insulation under the floor.
Firefighters made their way to a crawl space to gain access to the fire underneath the residence, and controlled the fire within twenty minutes of arrival.
Mount Vernon Fire Marshal, Steve Riggs investigated the fire and was able to determine the furnace had caused the fire. Damage to the residence is estimated to be between $10,000 and $15,000.
A total of 16 firefighters responded to the scene.
The Mount Vernon Fire Department would like to remind residents that a functioning smoke detector can save your life and the lives of those you love. Firefighters urge residents to have an escape plan for your home, and a safe place for your family to meet in the event of a fire evacuation.
